History of KeyBank

KeyBank is said to be formed by the merger of Society Corporation of Cleveland and KeyCorporation of New York. The merger made KeyBank the 10th largest bank in the United States. The bank’s history can be traced back to Albany New York in 1925 and Cleveland Society of savings which was established in 1849. The society for Savings came into existence in 1849. To start with, it was a mutual savings bank and was started by Samuel H Mather.

In the latter half of the 19th Century, the small outgrowing Bank was established in the Society for Savings Building on Public Square in the ten-store building. The bank was highly conservative though it was located in a modern setup. In 1949, the bank celebrated its centenary. Even at this time, it had only one office with 200 million deposits. This asset helped the bank to absorb the onslaughts of economic depression and financial crises. The society was converted from mutual to a public company in 1958. And, it subsequently acquired 12 community banks during the period 1958-1978.

Society Corporation bought Trust Corp in 1990 and Cleveland Trust and CleveTrust Corporation (September 1991). The strength of Cleveland Trust was the firm personal and corporate trust of businesses. But it’s strength become unstable because of bad loans in real estate. 1925 the Commercial Bank of Albany came into existence. In 1965, it was recognized under the National Banking Act (1964) and renamed as National Commercial Bank of Albany. The merger of Key and Society happened in 1994 after due approval by the regulatory bodies. The two business entities are said to be an odd couple despite the merge said to be on par.

In 2016, KeyCorp bought First Niagara Bank for $4.1 billion for stock and cash. The acquisition made Key’s stronger in England and Upstate New York.

    1. I had great experiences with this branch. People are helpful and always do their best to support them as easily as possible. I gave up my debit card in the ATM and somebody came up and handed it to me at the door as I left. Banks are usually difficult to work with. I think the Key, and this one in particular, does what it can to make the process painless.

    2. For more than 12 years, I have been a loyal customer. They worked with me and last year dismissed some overdraft charges. Yet now they have gone beyond and beyond. They were compassionate and supportive as I went through divorce. You have agreed to scrutinize my account and show me my bank statements from the last seven years. They came back to me instantly and do whatever they can. Yay, Key’s Patrick!
