David L. Karns, along with his wife, Charlotte, started Karns Quality Foods in 1959. The family has run the business continuously since then. At first, it was a small meat market with a few employees. Now, Karns is one of the leading grocery stores in the region, with locations in a lot of states.
During the 1960s–1970s Karns company experienced a lot of growth. Many new stores were opened during this time. The company also started to offer more than just meat, they began to sell groceries as well.
In 1991 Karns Quality Foods was sold to Food Lion. This was a difficult time for the company, as many changes were made that the Karns family did not agree with. However, they persevered and eventually regained control of the company in 2001.
Karns Quality Foods purchased the remaining Fox’s Market locations in September 2006, bringing its total to eight. Middletown and Hershey acquired two more stores from Fox’s Markets. After this step, Karns had become the largest independent grocery retailer in central Pennsylvania.
In 2019, a 9th store was built on the site of a former Darrenkamp’s (closed in 2018). A 10th shop was opened in Duncannon, run by Mutzabaugh’s, in December 2021. Karns owners believed that the market could not only survive but thrive in the current grocery landscape.
