History
Hooters, Inc., was founded by 6 businessmen in Clearwater, Florida on April 1, 1983. The 6 founders were: Lynn D. Stewart, Ed Droste, Ken Wimmer, Dennis Johnson, Gil DiGiannantonio, and Billy Ranieri.
The business was started on April Fools’ Day as a joke. The 6 owners believed that they had a very small likelihood of succeeding. Part of this was because the restaurant’s first location had been used to set up several businesses that failed.
A year later, the 6 founders sold their rights to the business to Hugh Connerty. Connerty would later be bought out by Robert H. Brooks and a team of Atlantan investors. Brooks bought majority stake in 2002 and became chairman.
Under Brook’s control, Hooters was able to grow to over 425 stores worldwide. Stores that were located in Manhattan, New York and Tampa Bay Area, Chicago remained under the control of Hooters while all other locations were put under Hooters of America.
Brooks passed away in July 2006 from a heart attack. He gave most of the business rights to his children, Cody Brooks and Boni Belle Brooks. 240 buyers expressed interest in buying Hooters of America shortly after Brook’s death.
The Chanticleer Holdings LLC ended up buying the company from Brook’s family in January 2011. As of 2013, the company ran 160 restaurants under Hooters of America and over 430 franchises.
