The history of Hobby Lobby foundation
In 1972, David Green, a Southern Baptist minister, decided to open a retail store in Oklahoma City. He called the company Hobby Lobby and named it after his Christian-based summer camp: Hobby Lobby Creative Centers. The first store opened up with 40 items available for purchase in that same year. It started as an extension of the Green family’s bible study classes and then turned into a multi-billion dollar retailing empire.
In 1980, the company opened its first out-of-state store in Arkansas. The following year, it had stores in Iowa, Nebraska, and Oklahoma. Green continued to open new stores throughout the 1980s and by 1989, there were 50 Hobby Lobby locations across 11 states.
