The history of the famous Hmart grocery stores

In 1982 the initial Han Ah Reum (previous name of Hmart) was opened in Queens, New York, by a family of Korean immigrants. The business was started with only $10,000 and the selling of vegetables from their own garden. In 1987 they opened an additional location in Little Neck, Nyc.

In 1992 Han Ah Reum changed its name to Hmart as a reflection of its business model which supplies fresh food at affordable prices to “help people live better”. The grocery store chain expanded with 10 more stores.

In 1997 they opened the first grocery store, that was not focused on Northeast U.S, in Chicago, Illinois. The following year they opened their biggest store of the time with 21,000 sq ft on Woodhaven Blvd in Queens.

Throughout the early 2000s, they had more than 50 locations throughout New York City and New Jersey. However, that number has grown exponentially to over 84 stores throughout the U.S of America and 13 stores in Canada. It is estimated that Hmart grosses $1billion worth of sales each year!

In 2003 they moved to Canada and opened a store in Markham, Ontario. This location is still open and has been joined by three additional locations in Scarborough, Alberta and Mississauga since then!

In 2011 they were considered one of 13 grocery store chains with over $1 billion worth of sales annually according to Forbes magazine. In 2012 they were listed on Asian Week’s Top 100 list as a company that is “creating a better community”.

Is “Crying in H Mart” a true story?

This memoir, first published in Korean as “Emotions of a Housewife” (Korean title: “I Miss the Old Country”), focuses on her experiences trying to fit into American culture while retaining her Korean traditions. The English translation was well-reviewed by Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly and Asia Sentinel.

Michelle Zauner, who is a popular singer under the name of Japanese Breakfast, wrote a book about her experiences living in a Korean household. The translated title of this memoir is “Crying in H Mart,” because of a specific instance where she cried at the Hmart grocery store. This memoir is somewhat autobiographical and is a great read if you want to learn about Korean culture from someone who lived through it themselves.
