History

The company’s humble beginning goes back to 1947 and to Vasteras in Sweden. Erling Persson founded the brand and gave in it the name Hennes, Swedish for hers. It was exclusively dealing in women’s fashion. In 1960, Erling bought out Mauritz Widforss. This was a hunting apparel company. To include the new brand and bring in menswear, Erling changed the company name to Hennes & Mauritz. This was shortly followed by a formal rebranding and shortening of the name to H&M.

After local success, H&M began to look outside Sweden. A string of stores emerged in Norway, Denmark, the UK, and Switzerland. In 1973, the company included a line of underwear and intimate outfits. In the same time, H&M sought the celebrity endorsement of Anni-Frid Lyngstad for their face of cosmetics. In the 1980s, it was time for H&M to go to the world with many more stores across expansive Europe. In 1982, Erling relinquished the company’s reins to his son Steffan Persson.

The 1990s saw H&M make bold moves and added A-list models in Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, and Christy Turlington to their ads. In 1998, H&M was the first fashion brand to open an online shopping platform. Since then, the company has grown into a global fashion powerhouse keeping up with modern trends.
