Hertz hours

The Hertz Corporation, a subsidiary of Hertz Global Holdings Inc., is an American car rental company with international locations in 150 countries worldwide. Hertz is the largest U.S. car rental company by sales. On May 7, 2013, it was announced that Hertz would relocate its corporate headquarters to Estero, just outside Fort Myers in Southwest Florida.

Hertz Global Holdings Inc., through its subsidiary The Hertz Corporation, operates the Hertz, Dollar, and Thrifty vehicle rental brands in approximately 10,450 corporate and franchisee locations throughout North America, Europe, The Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, and New Zealand.

The current “Hertz” name is derived from the German word “Herz” which means “heart”, reflecting the company’s early slogan “The Car with the Heart.” However, it is also a play on the word “hertz”, which is the SI unit of frequency defined as one cycle per second.

Hertz background story

The first ‘Hertz’ car rental agency was founded in Chicago, Illinois by Walter L. Jacobs in 1918 with three Model T Ford cars. While the company began to rent other types of cars, Hertzog (the son of founder Walter Jacobs) established the slogan “Rent-a-Car” for its line of services in 1928 after discovering consumers associated the original meaning (“free”) with reckless abandon and poor service.

The current tagline “We Try Harder Because Hertz Is Not Only A Car Rental Company; It’s An Airport Hotel On The Move.” was created by an advertising agency in the 1980s after a study of the New York market showed that a sample group associated Hertz with high quality.

The name had its origins when an internal memo circulated by Jacobs’ son, complained about some printing samples for a car rental ad campaign were misspelled “Hertzog” as “Herzog.” A new young advertising assistant suggested changing it to “Hertz,” saying the German pronunciation would give it more class and an innovative approach.

In June 1918, operating from his father’s garage in Chicago, Walter L. Jacobs founded the Hertz Drive-Ur-Self Corporation with a capitalization of $1,000 renting out 13 Ford Model T cars which was a huge success. He moved the company to New York City in 1919 where he and his brother worked from a brownstone at 50 West 40th Street.

The business was soon earning a lot of money annually and in 1920 he renamed it “Hertz Drive-ur-Self System,” focusing on renting cars by the day or week with insurance included. The following year he began renting out an entire fleet of cars with drivers and expanded to Europe, but found that Hertz had been beaten there by Alfred Eli Beutler, who already had been running a successful car rental company since 1916.

In 1923 Jacobs purchased him out for $500 plus a share of the business which then operated under the name Hertz Autolease Ltd. He sold all his shares of the home office so no one would be able to accuse him of unfair practices.

John Hertz bought the company back in 1953 from general Motors through another company Omnibus Corporation and renamed it to what we know – Hertz Corp. In 1955 Hertz had a chance of showing his legal skills again when he was sued by the United States Internal Revenue Service for $5.2 million in unpaid taxes and fined him an additional $14 million dollars. He lost the case but appealed to the Supreme Court, which reversed it.

In 1967 Herz company became a publicly-traded stock on the New York Stock Exchange and, as a result of his success, Hertz was labeled as the “Car Baron.”

Today it is one of the largest car rental companies in the world. Operating worldwide, Hertz had more than 14,000 corporate and franchisee locations served by approximately 58,700 employees. At an approximate 2% market share and over $8 billion revenue per year it’s just below Avis Budget Group at 4% but above National Car Rental at 1%.

Hertz produces many of their own vehicles but still works with some manufacturers such as Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Chrysler LLC, Daimler AG, and PSA Peugeot Citroën. It also operates its own Hertz #1 Gold Club for frequent renters similar to Avis #1 Club and National President’s Circle and Advantage Plus programs for large and regular customers.

Who is Hertz owned by?

Nowadays the Hertz Corporation is owned by a private equity company called Wyndham Worldwide.

What is the vision of Hertz company?

Hertz is striving to become the first choice for customers around the world with service, quality, and value.

“We seek to ensure that Hertz will continue to be a strong, successful, global enterprise that provides employment opportunities and fulfills our responsibilities to our employees, customers and business partners.” -John Tague (President & CEO)

What are the strengths of this company?

Hertz’s strengths include its experience in renting cars for more than 100 years; an enormous customer base (about 10 million people use this platform every year); diverse revenue sources (rental fees make up about 70% of total revenues); well-known brand name; strong management team; excellent working relationships with key manufacturers; scale economies; high efficiency; the ability to use the Hertz #1 Gold Club membership for both business and personal benefit; huge market share (about 3% worldwide); world-wide infrastructure; consistent revenue stream; experience in selling vehicles.

Hertz car hire service

The company’s rental car fleet is one of the largest in the world, with about 650,000 vehicles. Hertz offers its customers not just cars but car services including sales of new and used vehicles; finance and insurance products; maps and GPS navigation systems; extended warranties; vehicle customization programs (paint color by VIN, decal kits, etc.).

The cars offered for hire are divided into groups – Compact, Economy, Fullsize (includes premium), SUV (including Minivan and Convertible), Premium, Prestige & Specialty.

The biggest weakness is that when you rent a car through this company, they usually charge more than the closest competition. This happens because Hertz has to pay for its own fleet of cars and also cover expenses related to worldwide operations, whereas Avis only rents out its fleet without buying new vehicles or maintaining them. Hertz can’t afford to charge extra fees because it’s losing money every time someone doesn’t use their “Gold Agreement”.

Herz loyalty program

Herz offers several different programs for long-term clients. The Hertz #1 Gold Club is a free, elite customer loyalty program that provides vehicle upgrades (the top car available in class or similar); reduced insurance rates; waived surcharges on one-way rentals; waived LDW fees with certain companies; loyalty bonuses.

Avis Budget Group has its #1 Club Premier level of membership which costs $50 per year and gives you an extra 20% off your rental rate, but they also have Advantage Program which is free and grants you 10% off. National Car Rental has Emerald Club Executive Level membership costing $39 per year which offers a 15% discount plus other benefits not included with the regular membership plans.

It’s very hard to compare Hertz to its competitors because they have so many options available, but their prices are definitely higher than most other companies.

Hertz services and products

As we already know, Hertz provides car rental services and also sells vehicles. It has a great number of locations worldwide (about 12,000) and about 81% of them are in the US (9,200). The company is divided into three regional divisions: North America; Europe; and International which is responsible for 20 R&D facilities on five continents. Equipment needed to perform work is housed in about 5,300 facilities worldwide.

National Car Rental

National Car Rental offers its services through the NATIONAL brand and has 1,900 sites across North America. They also own two other brands: Emerald Club offering Executive Level membership for $39; and Emerald Aisle (full-service) for $15.

Sixt is a Germany-based company that offers its services in more than 17 countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. It has 3,150 locations worldwide.

Europcar offers its services all over Europe, North America, Australia, and New Zealand through 1,300 offices. The car rental company also owns Firefly international brand which operates in the US under the name of EPIK. Firefly is present in about 11 European countries with 100 branches located there.

Other well-known companies are Thrifty Car Rental USA (has 612 sites), Alamo Rent A Car (the company was owned by Enterprise but it’s now owned by investment group Apollo), Ace Rent A Car (has 80 locations in the US and Canada), Payless Car Rental (offers services using about 400 branches worldwide).

Hertz company size, revenue, and employees

From all the companies we have talked about so far, Hertz offers one of the best benefits packages with a variety of options including flexible spending accounts, medical coverage for both full-time and part-time employees. Life insurance, retirement options, and more.

Car rental companies are known to be mostly customer service-based because it’s what keeps them going. Despite being a large-sized business that has been around for almost 100 years now, Hertz isn’t doing too well on its customer satisfaction index which was measured at just over 50% – the average score is 65%.

The number of employees working for Hertz was 30,000 at the end of 2013 and it’s expected to increase by 3.5% this year (4,500 new workers). It seems like the company’s goal is to expand its services; however, we can’t say that they offer more than competing companies do.

Hertz franchising: what should you know?

You have an opportunity to franchise your Hertz business with them if you are in a country where they don’t have any offices. But the only thing is that you need to show an enormous amount of financial resources before they allow you to take on this challenge.

You will need to pay a $25,000 franchising fee and $5,000 for your area license. After you open the office and meet all performance goals in one of their markets, they will refund you $15,000 and then you’ll start gaining a percentage of the gross profits – 5% each year for five years.

So if we put this together it means that your total expenses will be at least $45,500 which is ridiculously expensive. You can always try to find another way to do business with them because starting such an expensive franchise might not be worth it.

But the deal will be worth it, as Hertz is one of the biggest car rental companies in the world and they have a long history of success and great reputation.

Is Hertz waiving the fee under 25?

Hertz is currently offering a special promotion for drivers between the ages of 18-24. They have waived the rental fee for up to four days as long as you rent a car for your next vacation.

The offer is limited to select times throughout the year and you’ll be able to find it on their official website by going through the “discounted rates” section. Don’t forget to check out other car rental companies’ deals as well because they might have equally great offers waiting for you!

Are Thrifty and Hertz the same company?

There are many different ways in which you can find car rental companies in Europe, North America, and Australia. However, there’s a chance that people tend to confuse Hertz for Thrifty because they have similar names and both businesses offer a wide variety of vehicles.

But the thing is that Hertz is an American company while Thrifty is Australian based business even though they have locations all over the world. And in 2012 Thrifty joined Hertz company which means that they might be sharing some data but at least not the name.

Hertz is one of the oldest car rental companies in America, founded in 1918 by Walter Jacobs. The business has been doing well ever since and it’s going strong with over 10,000 locations all over the world.

For a company that big, Hertz promotes itself as a customer-oriented business that focuses on offering fast and simple services for their customers who want great value for money when traveling with their family or friends. They offer quality insurance coverage plans that will protect you from any possible road accidents while driving around the city.
