History
The first Hardee’s restaurant was opened by Wilder Hardee on September 3, 1960. This was in Greenville, North Carolina. After experiencing a year full of success, Hardee decided to expand.
He invited Leonard Rawls and James Gardner who helped launch the first company store in Rocky Mountain, North Carolina in 1961. According to Hardee, Rawls and Gardner took over control of the restaurant after he lost to them in a game of poker. He also sold his remaining shares to them after realizing his loss.
Rawls and Gardner disputed that story and claimed that they bought out Hardee. The two expanded the business and established franchises all over the country. By the end of the 1960s, there were nearly 200 restaurants running under the Hardee’s name.
Expansion continued into other parts of the world such as Germany. The company also acquired other restaurants such as Sandy’s and Utah-based Dee’s Drive-In. In 1981, Canadian company Imasco Limited purchased Hardee’s for $44 million.
Hardee’s went on to acquire other fast-food chains such as the Roy Rogers Restaurants and Rax Roast Beef in the early 1990s. The restaurant was then bought by its current parent company, CKE Restaurants Holdings, Inc., for $327 million.
