The history of Hallmark
Joyce Clyde Hall since decided to convert a 20th-century postcards craziness into his own business. That is why in 1907 he and his brothers founded their very own company called Merchants Trade Card Company. It was just before World War I, when they changed the name to Hall Brothers. Initially, the headquarters were located in Norfolk, Nebraska.
Their business was steel engraving and printing on postcards, trademarks as well as advertising novelties. With time passing by, new lines of printables were included in the assortment. And eventually, in 1910 even Christmas cards joined the line-up.
Brothers invented the modern wrapping paper for their products.
In 1915 the mail-order catalog came to be, which was a great thing because it allowed people from all around the country to order their printables. That is why Hall Brothers Company got national exposure and started to spread its wings. Eventually, in 1918 they moved into bigger headquarters –in Kansas City. And only three years late, before Christmas 1921, they unveiled cards with envelopes! Prior to that, there were separate cards for mailing and gift-giving.
In 1923 the company decided to use a new slogan – Good Things Come In Small Packages. Joyce Clyde Hall refused steel engraving as an art form and switched to the lithography method because of better output quality.
In 1928 they introduced a Hallmark brand name, which was a combination of names of founders’ brothers – Harold and Clyde. And in the early 1930s, they made another important step by developing an original sketching pad (it is actually referred to as R&S, by Hallmark mind you).
In 1934 they introduced their first non-postcard item called Magic Notes. These playing cards were actually musical greeting cards that played when opened, but the idea didn’t really take off.
In 1944 Hallmark set their motto ‘When you care enough to send the very best. It is still in use nowadays.
In 1951 they opened their new factory, but its location was carefully hidden for security reasons during the time of the cold war – Hallmark Cards Inc had its headquarters on Strawberry Hill Avenue in Kansas City.
Even though there were some leaders who believed that it wouldn’t be good for business to put family pictures on cards, Joyce Clyde Hall really went for it and did just that! And he was right because this idea proved to be very successful. And even though his wife wasn’t too fond of this idea at first, she eventually agreed with her husband’s decision after seeing how popular these cards became among customers.
Today Hallmark is headquartered in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. The company consists of more than 30,000 employees, who are working in more than 3,600 stores across North America.
