History

Initially, H-E-B was founded by Florence Butt as the C.C. Butt Grocery Store on 26th November 1905 in Kerrville, Texas, on the ground floor of her family home. On his return from WWI, Howard Edward Butt, the youngest son of Florence, took over the store in 1919. He tried expansions in Central Texas at four locations, shortly after taking over its charge from his mother, but failed at all the venues.

In 1927, after purchasing three grocery stores in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, he finally succeeded in launching a second successful store in Del Rio, Texas. He named this store H-E-B, on the basis of first initials of his name Howard E. Butt.

In 1977, the younger son of Howard E. Butt, Charles became president of H-E-B. In 2016 he became the chairman and CEO of this company as he boosted the annual sales from $250million in 1971 to $13billion in 2016. Craig Boyan was the President and COO of the H-E-B in 2010. In 2018, Martin Otto, the former Chief Merchant, and CFO become the COO of the company. In 2011, the Forbes’ list of largest privately held companies ranked the company at 12th position. In 2018, H-E-B acquired a wholly owned subsidiary, Favor Delivery. The details of this merger were never disclosed. However, there were lots of speculation about the merger in the media.
