On August 8, 1991, the 1.7 million-square-foot Gurnee Mills outlet mall opened in Gurnee, Illinois. The shopping center was developed by the Mills Corporation and was the company’s first project. When it opened, Gurnee Mills featured 185 stores and was anchored by Marshalls, JCPenney Outlet Store, Neiman Marcus Last Call, Saks Fifth Avenue Off 5th, and Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World.
Gurnee Mills was expanded in 1998 with the addition of a 1,200-seat food court and more than 40 new stores.
