History
In 1915, Sam Richman started a small clothing store located in Omaha. He named it “Outfitters to the Family.” He was later joined by Dan Gordman who became a full partner. Richman’s store occupied a small space at 16th and Chicago. After a number of years, it grew to occupy the entire building.
The two partners opened a second store in 1948 in South Omaha, Nebraska. Gordman bought Richman’s interest in the company and rebranded the store to Richman Gordman. He was later joined by his sons and nephew in the 1960s.
The company expanded into Des Moines, Iowa and Topeka, Kansas in the 1970s. By 1974, it had its tenth store in Grand Island, Nebraska. Gordman was one of the first businessmen to incorporate self-service shoes, central checkouts and shopping carts in Omaha.
He decided to open a small store to test a new concept that he had in mind. The idea was to sell merchandise from Richman Gordman at half the price. He named the store ½ Price Store. The success of the idea led to the establishment of 6 more stores in the 1970s.
In 1990, Richman Gordman celebrated its 65th anniversary while running 16 ½ Price Store and 16 Richman Gordman departmental stores. However, in 1992, the company filed for bankruptcy protection and closed all its departmental stores.
Its off-price stores became its sole focus. It emerged out of bankruptcy in 1993 under the brand name Richman Gordman ½ Price Stores. By 1996, all stores were renamed to Gordmans. The company was, however, bought by Sun Capital Partners in 2008.
In March 2017, Gordmans filed for bankruptcy in Nebraska. Stage Stores decided to buy 48 of Gordmans’ stores the same month. This included the company’s intellectual property, brand name, and distribution center.
Stage Stores announced in 2019 that it was planning to completely leave the department store market. It wanted to operate all 700 Gordmans stores using the off-price model. Unfortunately, Stage Stores filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in May 2020. Its efforts had, nevertheless, resulted in a 17% increase in same-store sales during the November-January fiscal year.
