The history begins in 1898 when Frank Seiberling founded The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio. In 1905, the company developed a way to stretch raw rubber into the fabric, creating a pneumatic tire that would not burst upon inflation and made the auto industry possible.

In 1917, Goodyear established its Aircraft Division in Marysville, Ohio to build military training aircraft. After World War I ended, it received a contract to build the Curtiss HS-2L flying boat for the U.S. Navy. On March 18, 1919, Admiral Byrd’s airplane took off from the Goodyear dirigible, which was moored at the Naval Aircraft Factory in Philadelphia, on his first flight over the North Pole.
From 1919 to 1926, all of Goodyear’s aircraft were manufactured by another company under license. In 1927, it developed its own sports plane for air racing. Over the years, it produced more than 10,000 piston-engine airplanes and also built experimental propeller planes.
Goodyear ceased aircraft production during World War II. Afterward, it continued to build military aircraft until 1967 when it ended its connection with aviation.
