Goodwill Hours

The Goodwill Company is a non-profit organization that focuses on empowering the underprivileged in society to earn their own income. The company was started in the United States and has now grown into an international company with branches in several countries.

Goodwill focuses on providing employment opportunities to people who would otherwise be marginalized in the job market. They do this in multiple ways. The first one is through job training. Many unemployed people lack the relevant skills that would allow them to apply for jobs and earn money. Goodwill bridges this gap by providing education for several careers, including repairs. They also facilitate job placement for people with the required talent who are yet to find jobs. They do this by partnering with organizations that need employees, then link these companies to persons in their unemployed database. Goodwill also gives jobs to veterans and other individuals who would, otherwise, be denied employment elsewhere.

History

Goodwill Company was started in 1902. At the time, it was a church program under the Morgan Methodist church. The man behind the idea was named Edgar J. The pioneers of the company firmly believed in empowering people by giving them the means to fend for themselves, as opposed to simply giving them donations. Their first project involved collecting damaged household items and clothes, then showing a group of people how to fix them. The goods would then be resold in great shape, and the workers would be paid for their services. In 1915, the program was then renamed into Goodwill and slowly began growing to help out more people. Over time, their mandate went beyond employing people to do repair jobs, and became about training and empowering the employees.

The Goodwill headquarters are found in Maryland, in the United States. The company was, however, started in Boston. They have gone beyond the American borders to serve in countries such as South Korea and Canada. In the United States alone, they have over 100 retail stores that fund their operations. They also collaborate with sponsors who share their values and want to contribute to improving the unemployment statistics. They have employed numerous workers who are involved in the actual production of goods for sale.

Key Facts about the Company

The company has received backlash in the past, because of how they do their business. As mentioned earlier, Goodwill employees work on repairing damaged items and making them suitable for retail or bulk sales. They obtain these items through donations from the public. To this end, they have multiple retail stores in all the countries they are in, where the donations are received, and repaired goods sold to the public. The company has been criticized about paying their workers below the minimum wage. Also, some of their CEOs have been scrutinized in the past, for receiving very high employment compensation, making them some of the highest wage earners.

Goodwill has also been accused of lobbying in attempts to increase their own profit margins. This happened when the company supported a legal proposal to reduce the number of donation boxes available to the public from various organizations. This was seen as an attempt to increase their share of public donations while stifling other charity groups.

  1. For a while I have come to this specific goodwill. This is pretty clean and the workers are always nice. It can be hit or miss, but I still seem to find something to work with. I usually look for my children’s clothing, costume items, or the things that Target didn’t sell. I found several clothing items usually sold at Target with tags (mostly seasonal items). I don’t even know about the parking lot and how they set it up. The drop-off area is convenient for donations “what did not sell in your yard.”

  2. Great support, easy to donate too, always finding a gem. We’ve been giving some clothes lately and driving, giving and going is so quick. We have noticed furniture and nicknacks.
