History
In 1935 David Shakarian established his first little health and food store named Lackzoom in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His specialty was yogurt. His father helped him introduce it. The store also had other healthy foods which they sold such as, the grains, honey and “healthy sandwiches”. People weren’t very familiar with the idea of healthy food back then but the store was still welcomed. His first day’s sales comprised just $35, but still, he was able to gather enough money to open another store in the next six months.
Shakarian went through a huge loss when he met with a disaster in 1936. It was a flood which wiped both stores out. But instead of giving up to the situation, he did all that was possible to reopen the stores again. In a short span of five years, he became the owner of six Pittsburgh area stores. Then came the era of the 60s which witnessed some massive changes in terms of diet. People were more welcoming to the concept of diet and nutrition. That’s when the demand for healthy and nutritious food raised and Shakarian was able to cope with the increasing demand of the people. This made him extremely famous. He then changed the name of the store into General Nutrition Centres.
With the growth in the store count, the company started producing its own mineral and vitamin supplements and foods, cosmetics and beverages. By the beginning of the 1980s, the store count increased to over 1,000. At present, GNC is the largest retailer which specializes in nutritional products like minerals, vitamins, herbals and other supplements and energy, nutrition and diet products.
Today, GNC has almost 5000 stores all over the United States along with 1000 of franchises as well as 1200 Rite Aid stores and 46 franchise operations in the international markets.
