History

Fry’s Electronics, Inc. was founded in Sunnyvale, California in 1985. The founders were Kathy Kolder and the three Fry brothers – Randy, Dave, and John.

The three brothers had just received $1 million each from their father, Charles Fry, who had sold the Fry’s Supermarkets for $14 million. Having no interest in grocery store retailing, they opened the Fry’s Electronics Store.

John came up with the idea of selling computer and electronics supplies using the model of grocery retailing. Their first store stocked integrated circuits, computer components, software, as well as test and measurement equipment. In addition, it offered T-shirts, potato chips, magazines, and technical books.

It advertised itself as the “The One-Stop Shop for the Silicon Valley Professional”. As business grew, the first Sunnyvale store was closed and a second one was opened. It was a large establishment whose interior looked like that of a big computer.

In 1996, the Fry brothers transferred all their shares in the business to RDL, LLC and The Taw, L.P. The Taw ended up selling its shares to the former company. To date, it is not know why the Fry brothers transferred their shares.

Fry stores are huge and often stock different variations of the same type of electronic component. This has made them a popular stop for computer and electronics hobbyists. One of the few companies that was able to rival Fry’s was Incredible Universe, a superstore operated by Tandy. It was founded in 1992 but was alter absorbed into Fry’s Electronics in 1996.

Fry’s is different from Best Buy in that in addition to selling fully assembled computers, it also stocks individual components. As of 2014, it had 34 stores spread across 9 U.S. states. The company announced that it would be closing its oldest store which was located in Palo Alto.
