Where was First Watch started?
Ken Pendery and John Sullivan in 1983 had the opportunity to purchase a 3-store restaurant in San Diego, called The First Watch. It was a popular daytime cafe that was only open from 7am to 3pm. The new owners kept the name and the menu, but they made a few changes of their own. The biggest change they made was changing the hours of operation.
During the 1990s, the cafe started to expand. The original cafe was franchised and new cafes were opened in other parts of California. The menu also evolved, adding new items and removing others. In 1996, the company went public and started to franchise throughout the United States.
At the beginning of the 2000s, the company ran into some financial troubles and was forced to file for bankruptcy. However, it was able to rebound and continue to grow. In 2002 First Watch cafes were acquired by a private equity firm and the company began to expand even more.
In 2005, the company partnered with The Egg and I restaurants, which are also open for breakfast and lunch. After 3 years of partnership, the two companies decided to go their separate ways. Though, in 2014 First watch bought out The Good Egg restaurants and again became partners.
In 2017 Advent International bought the majority of the First Watch stakes. It allowed the company to have an investment to grow even larger. The goal of Advent is to help the company expand to new markets and open more cafes.
