About the founder

Due to Firestone’s popularity, most people were not aware of its founder Harvey S. Firestone (1868-1938). It was such a shame that this gentleman is not really popular compared to Henry Ford or Thomas Edison who invented the first electric light bulb known as Edison Light Tower.

Harvey Samuel Firestone was an American businessman famous for manufacturing and selling steel-reinforced rubber tires for his company Firestone Tire and Rubber Company.

He was born in Columbiana County, Ohio on January 7, 1868, to Henry Harmon Firestone and Alice Jeanette Bright. He has 3 siblings which were brothers William and Rollin and sister Idabelle. At age 24 he got married to a woman named Mary Osborne Firestone (1874-1938). Together they had 4 children namely Martha Mary, Harvey Samuel Jr., John, and Russell. During the time of his death in 1938, he was survived by 9 grandchildren.

Harvey Firestone died at age 70 due to angina pectoris aggravated by coronary thrombosis on October 26, 1938, in Denver Colorado which was confirmed by his doctor Dr. J. E. Harkins.

His funeral was held on November 1, 1938, at the family home located at 2300 East Broad Street in Colombiana County Ohio where he was buried the next day beside his wife Mary Osborne Firestone who passed away 10 years ago on September 25, 1938, also due to cardiac illness complicated with pneumonia at her residence located at 112 Woodland Drive in East Akron near their tire company’s branch office building known as “The Annex”.

History of Firestone brand

In 1900, Firestone started its company by supplying pneumatic rubber tires for wagons, buggies, and other forms of wheeled vehicles with solid rubber tires. In the early years, the company’s chief rival was B.F. Goodrich Company whose first pneumatic tire is made from vulcanized natural rubber or “vulcanite”.

In the 1920s, Firestone created the first tubeless automobile tires in its Akron factory located at South Broadway Street.

By 1929, Firestone became the world’s largest producer of tires making about 28 million tires every year with production facilities spread across the USA and Canada including their factories located in New Jersey, Tennessee, and Ohio.

A few years later during the time of World War 2 (1939-1945), Firestone was the only tire manufacturer to remain profitable due to supplying the U.S. military with much-needed tires for fighter planes, tanks, trucks, and other vehicles used by the United States Armed Forces during that time.

After World War 2, Firestone returned to civilian production of automobile tires in all types including the first tubeless radial car tire which later became an original equipment standard on most cars today.

The company also produced other products outside the tire industry like batteries for golf carts, forklifts, and electric vehicles.

In 1988, Bridgestone bought out Firestone Tire Company after it acquired all its assets making it one of its subsidiaries alongside Dunlop Tire. This acquisition led Bridgestone to enjoy being the world’s largest tire and rubber company.

In 2000, Bridgestone Corporation was accused by Ford to use defective Firestone tires on its Ford Explorer SUV (Sport Utility Vehicles) to which Bridgestone and Firestone denied and blamed it all on poor vehicle maintenance and driver behavior instead.

This issue caused a widespread concern after several complaints of accidents involving Ford Explorers equipped with Firestone tires were reported in various media outlets including that of deaths due to crashes. This situation worsened after the U.S National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducted an investigation regarding this issue which led to a massive recall for the replacement of 14 million Firestone ATX, ATX II, and Wilderness AT radial tires manufactured before mid-year 2001 eventually replaced by Goodyear.

Currently, Bridgestone Corporation is one of the main subsidiaries of Tokyo-based multinational rubber and pharmaceutical company Bridgestone Group based in Tokyo also makes other products like sports equipment (Fila), glasses (Ace), and chemicals (Sumitomo Chemical).
