What is the history of this brand?
Juan Francisco Ochoa began the eatery in Guasave, Sinaloa, Mexico, in 1975. But in the United States the restaurant chain was founded in 1980. The first U.S. location was in Los Angeles. The first American site was only 1,500 square feet (140 m2) in size and earned more than $125,000 a month in its first year of operation. The initial menu consisted of a half or whole chicken with a packet of warm tortillas and a cup of salsa.
In 1983, three years after the restaurant opened, Ochoa sold a majority stake in the company to Denny’s. El Loco Pollo, Inc., a U.S.-based corporation, expanded the number of shops in Southern California from 19 to 29 during the course of 18 months under new management. In 1985, El Pollo Loco restaurants in Arizona and Texas were added.
In 1990 the company opened the 20th restaurant in the chain. It was the first drive-thru location in El Pollo Loco’s history. The company pulled out of the Northeast due to increased competition from Boston Market and other quick-service chains.
