What is the history behind Eastland Mall?
General Growth Properties built the mall, which opened in August 1981. It was the start of a new era for Charlotte, which had only one other mall at the time – SouthPark. Eastland was the first “two-level” mall in the city, and its opening coincided with a surge of suburban growth in Charlotte.
The mall was sold by Equity to a passive institutional investor, Equitable Life Assurance Society, in 1984. In 1995, the mall was again sold to Simon DeBartolo Group.
The original design of the mall was an “L” shape, with a food court and two department store anchors – Montgomery Ward and Belk. In 1992, a major renovation added a third department store anchor – JC Penney – and expanded the mall by adding a wing that included more stores and restaurants.
In the late 1980s, Snyder’s was taken over by Hess’s, and in 1988 it became known as Hess’s. Hess’s ran into trouble a few years later, closing this location in 1993. The former Hess’s space was taken over by Proffitt’s in 1994.
The Montgomery Ward store at Eastland Mall closed in 1997, and the space remained vacant until 1999 when Target opened a store there. The former Belk location was sold to Dillard’s in 1998.
