What is the Dillions’ history?
John S. Dillon, a wholesale grocer, founded the first Dillions store in 1890. With the help of his three sons, Hugh, Raymond, and Robert, the Dillons grocery store chain rapidly expanded across Kansas. In 1913, he launched his “J.S. Dillon Cash Store” in Hutchinson, Kansas, employing a novel marketing technique known as cash and carry, in which the shop would not provide credit or delivery services. The firm was renamed “Dillon Mercantile Company, Inc.” in 1917.
