What is the history of Dillards?
In 1938 William T. Dillard, then a recent graduate from the University of Arkansas, took over a small store in Nashville, Arkansas that his father had purchased. The store was called “Dillard’s”. In 1956 Dillard moved his store to a larger location in Tyler, Texas. By this time he had added several other departments including children’s clothing, home furnishings, and cosmetics.
In 1960 Dillards opened its first suburban branch store in Fort Worth, Texas. This was followed by stores in Oklahoma City (1962), Kansas City (1964), Denver (1968), and Atlanta (1969).
By 1970 there were 23 Dillards stores across the South and Southwest.
