DD’s Discounts is an off-price department store that was founded in 2004. The “dd” part of its name stands for deeply discounted. The store is currently operated by Ross Stores Inc., a company that is based in California.

Ross Stores Inc. also operates ROSS Dress for Less Chain. It was started by Morris “Morrie” Ross in San Bruno, California in 1950. Ross spent a lot of his time at the store, doing 85 hours every week to ensure the buying and bookkeeping was in check.

In 1958, he sold the business to William Isackson and became a commercial and residential real estate developer. Isackson grew the company to 6 stores which were located in Pacifica, San Bruno, Castro Valley, Redwood City, Vacaville, and Novato.

In 1982, Isackson sold the business to Mervin Morris, founder of Mervyns department stores, and a group of investors. All 6 Ross stores were bought and changed to off-price retail units. In a span of three years, Ross had grown to 107 stores.

This happened under the leadership of Don Rowlett and Stuart Moldaw. By 1995, the business was accumulating $1.4 billion in annual sales from its 292 stores located in 18 states. The numbers grew to $9.7 billion in 2012 with 1,091 stores spread out in 33 states. DD’s Discounts had already been formed and had 108 stores in 8 states. It contributed greatly to Ross’ earnings.
