What is the history of Dadeland Mall foundation?
In 1962, the Dadeland Shopping Center was developed by J. W. Seligman & Company, Inc. and opened in February of that year. It was one of the first air-conditioned, enclosed malls in Miami-Dade County and originally consisted of 300,000 square feet (28,000 m2) on two levels with J. C. Penney, FOOD FAIR Supermarkets (now Publix), and Burdines (now Macy’s) as the original anchor stores.
A Kresge five and dime store was also present at the mall’s opening. The Developer and owner of the center was Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., whose company built many shopping centers around the United States during that time, including the country’s first enclosed mall.
By 1971, the center had expanded to 1,000,000 square feet (93,000 m2) of space with F. W. Woolworth Company, Lord & Taylor, and Jordan Marsh (now Macy’s) as new anchor stores. In that same year DeBartolo Sr. transferred ownership of the shopping center to his son Edward J. DeBartolo Jr..
In 1974, Maison Blanche joined the tenant roster and in 1979 a two-story Pioneer supermarket opened at the north end of the property near US 1 and Kendall Drive (the former site of a Kresge store). A seven-story office tower known as Dadeland Financial Centre was also completed in 1979. In 1981, the mall was expanded again with the addition of a new two-story JCPenney store as well as a new food court. By 1983, Dadeland Mall had become the largest shopping center in Miami-Dade County.
In 1988, Lord & Taylor closed its location at Dadeland Mall after corporate parent BATUS Inc. decided to downsize the chain’s Florida operations. The former Lord & Taylor space was divided into three stores: Ikea (which opened in 1991), Off 5th Saks Fifth Avenue Outlet (opened in 1993), and Macy’s Home Store (opened in 1997). In 1989, Maison Blanche closed its Dadeland location after parent company Federated Department Stores sold the store to Dillard’s.
On October 24, 1992, a Hurrican Andrew hit South Florida and caused significant damage to Dadeland Mall. A temporary roof was installed so that the mall could reopen on November 12, 1992. In 1995, JCPenney closed its location at Dadeland Mall after the store was damaged by a fire. The former JCPenney space remained vacant until 1997 when it was divided into two stores: Borders (opened in 1998) and Old Navy (opened in 1999).
In 2007, the owner of Dadeland Mall, Simon Property Group, announced plans to renovate and expand the mall. The renovation included the addition of an outdoor lifestyle center known as “The Palms at Dadeland” which opened in phases between 2008 and 2010.
The expansion added over 90,000 square feet (8,400 m2) of new retail space to the mall. In 2008, the Borders store at Dadeland Mall closed as part of a nationwide downsizing by the bookseller. The former Borders space remained vacant until 2009 when it was divided into two stores: Forever 21 (opened in 2010) and H&M (opened in 2011).
In 2019, Dadeland Mall underwent a $300 million renovation which included the additions of new restaurants and stores, as well as an expansion of the existing Macy’s store. The renovation also included the addition of a new 12-story parking garage with 2,500 parking spaces.
