History of the Cumberland Farms Brand

Cumberland Farms was established in 1939. Vasilios Haseotes and Aphrodite Haseotes owned the largest dairy farm in Southern New England. It had grown from a one-cow farm that they had bought in Cumberland, Rhode Island in 1938.

They opened a store in Bellingham, Massachusetts in 1958 where they sold milk. The first Cumberland Farms store was founded in 1962 in Northeastern United States. Its success in the late 1960s was attributed to a successful ad campaign that was written by Brad Delp.

It later ventured into selling gasoline across the US in 1986. This was courtesy of a two-third limited partnership that the farm got into with the Golf Oil Company. However, Cumberland Farms sold its Gulf Oil shares in 2016.

In a move that was aimed at redeploying capital to new buildings and remaining stores, the farm sold 61 locations in September, 2010. This was followed by the closure of 29 more stores in 2011. More stores were closed in Florida in July 2018. The company said that it wanted to shift its attention to the East Coast.

In the past, Cumberland Farms has featured David Hasselhoff in its television ads. In the spring of 2019, ads began featuring former wrestler, Ric Flair, who is also known as “The Nature Boy”.

In April 2019, the company was reported to be exploring a possible sale of its entire chain with the Bank of America. This was later followed by an announcement on July 2019 that UK-based EG Group had entered into a binding agreement to acquire the chain.
