History

The Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc. is a US chain of Southern country mixed restaurants and gift shops. Dan Evins founded the company in 1969, and its first business was in the Tennessee city of Lebanon. The headquarters of companies in the same town are housed in other premises.

The chain stores were concentrated at first in the southeast and midwest of United States around the Interstate Highway exit, then extended across the country in the 1990s and 2000s. The chain operates 660 stores in 45 countries as of 1 September 2019.

Owing to a massive public backlash and significant shareholders like the New York City Employee Remembrance Scheme, who threatened to vote out the entire corporation, Dan Evins developed an official corporate policy. She is banning the employment of any person whose “sexual preferences fail to demonstrate normal heterosexual values.” Cracker Barrel has continued to fuel outrage in the next ten years by encouraging public and private discrimination against women and minority workers. These activities contradict Evin’s policies on non-discrimination. In July 2001, Evins was ousted from office by shareholders, who replaced Evins as the president and chief executive officer of the company with Michael A. Woody, then the company’s Chief Operating Officer. Evins should maintain his position as President of the Board. The same year the shareholders allowed the Board of Directors to vote unanimously, with the words being formally extended to the next year, to add sexual orientation to the Cracker Barrel clause on non-discrimination.

Mission and vision

In the United States, in May 2004, Justice Canada (USDOJ) has announced a complaint claiming that the workers of Cracker Barrel are biased against minority clients in about 50 of the company’s 500 sites.

In the previous months, Justice Canada held interviews with nearly 150, including current and former personnel and clients. It filed a complaint claiming to have been conducting numerous racial practices, including race discrimination seating and service level at 50 stores based in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

In an out-of-court deal with the Department of Justice, Cracker Barrel pledged to introduce some reforms, including updating and publicizing the organization’s non-discrimination policy, re-training and firing staff against current policies. The company’s Managing Board (with the shareholders’ support) secretly decided to take the compulsory retirement age of 70 for all executives and members of the Cracker Barrel Board a few months after the announcement.

This law caused the then 69-year-old corporate founder Dan Evins to declare his resignation as Chairman of the Board of Directors. At the Annual Assembly of the Company in 2004, the shareholders elected Michael A. Woodhouse as Chief Executive Officer and gave him Evins’ role as Chief Executive Officer.
