History
Elon Farnsworth, the Detroit Savings Fund Institute in 1849, founded the firm in Detroit.
The Detroit Savings Bank changed its name in 1871, and the Detroit Bank changed in 1936 to one of the few remaining areas of the Great Depression. In 1956, The Detroit Bank & Trust Company was combined with Birmingham National Bank, Ferndale National Bank, and Detroit Wabeek Bank. In 1973, DetroitBank Corporation was established as a holding firm. In 1982 the new name was used.
Comerica entered the industry in Florida in 1982. In 1983, the Bank of the Commonwealth of Michigan, a hometown competitor, was purchased. In 1988, after he obtained Grand Bancshares, he joined Texas.
In 1990, a new headquarters building, One Detroit Center, was approved for Comerica’s construction.
By buying Plaza Commerce Bancorp and InBancshares, the Bank extended into California in 1991.
In 1992, the Bank fused with the Manufacturers National Company, a similarly large Detroit bank.

In August 2007, the company revealed that it preferred 1717 Main Street in downtown Dallas. In August of that month, the company announced that it had planned to move its headquarters to Dallas to move closer to its client base in Sun Belt. In November 2007, the company’s management started moving into the new site and dubbed it a Comerica Tower.
For its Direct Express debit card service, the US Treasury department chose the issuing Bank in January 2008. To issue automatic payments such as social security checks to individuals without bank accounts, the Federal Government uses the term debit commodity (unbanked).
