The Story Behind Chuck E. Cheese

Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, created Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza Time Theatre (that was their first name until 1989) in 1977 to bring video-game arcades to family-friendly locations rather than adult-only venues such as pool halls.

While his animatronic show was in the process of being put together, Bushnell realized that the main character’s costume he bought was for a rat and not a coyote-like he originally thought. He then suggested changing the name from “Coyote Pizza” to “Rick Rat’s Pizza”.

However, his marketing team believed that this name would not be appealing to customers so they proposed “Chuck E. Cheese” instead; which is ultimately what the company went with. In 1978, when Atari’s corporate parent company Warner Communications refused to open additional locations, Bushnell bought the rights to the concept and characters from them for $500,000.

In order to grow his business outside of California and the west coast, Bushnell decided to franchise. This led to a co-development agreement between himself and Robert Brock of Topeka Inn Management in June 1979. In December 1979, Brock and Fechter formed ShowBiz Pizza Place Inc. Afterwards, Brock told Bushnell that their developing relationship was severed.

Pizza Time Theatre went public in 1981 but then lost $15 million two years later. By early 1984, Bushnell was struggling to keep up with his debts, which eventually resulted in filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on March 28th of that year. In 1992, every restaurant took on the name Chuck E. Cheese’s Pizza. Then, in March 1994, the name was truncated to just Chuck E. Cheese’s after a new concept design came out.

The restaurant franchise originally debuted under the name Charlie Cheese’s Pizza Playhouse in Australia during the early 1980s. However, by 2012 CEC was facing decreased revenue. In response, they ran a rebranding campaign which included changing their rat mascot into a rock star guitar-playing mouse. Although in-store sales continued to decline through 2013, merchandising and box office revenue increased.

In 2019, the corporation announced it would go public on the New York Stock Exchange through a shell company, Leo Holdings Corporation. Bloomberg also reported that after going public, Chuck E. Cheese would no longer have animatronic animals as part of the entertainment. However, the proposed merger between CEC Entertainment and Leo Holdings Corporation was terminated on July 29th, 2019.

Today, Chuck E. Cheese continues to be a popular family-friendly destination, offering pizza, video games, and rides for kids of all ages. With over 600 locations in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico, it’s easy to find a Chuck E. Cheese’s near you. So come join the party – there’s always something fun going on at Chuck E.
