The history behind Charter company
The system was founded in 1980 as Centcom Cable Associates by Charles H.Leonard and changed its name to Charter Communications after a merger with Tele-Communications Inc. (TCI) in 1998.
Charter was consolidated in 1993 by Barry Babcock, who became a chief executive officer (CEO) and then chairman of the board. When Charter was separated from TCI in 1998, it acquired with its sister company Liberty Media cable systems with 1.2 million customers that served areas including Fort Worth and Palm Springs, with about $1 billion of revenue expected for 1995; all companies used the Spectrum brand name starting in 1999.
In November 1999 this company went public and traded on the NASDAQ stock exchange. The company’s market capitalization was approximately $8.4 billion in 2005.
In 2009 Charter went bankrupt, and then introduced a new plan to build a fiber-optic network for its Internet services.
This company originally focused on the technology business but has been increasingly developing content as a key element of their strategy. In March 2011, Charter’s chief executive officer was Tom Rutledge who served as Cablevision’s president from November 26, 2007, until July 2010. In 2013 Charter acquired Time Warner Cable for approximately $69 billion after which it became the 3rd largest multichannel video service provider in North America owning 18 million customers with 70,000 employees.
In 2014 Time Warner Cable was spun off from the company. Charter also purchased Bright House Networks in 2015, which added another 2.5 million customers into their service portfolio.
During 2017, Charter also acquired Verizon’s internet, telephone and cable operations that operated under the name of “legacy Charter”.
