History

Carl’s Jr. began in Los Angeles on the Florence and Central corner of a hot dog cart. It was in 1941 when Carl Karcher borrowed $311 from their Plymouth car with his wife named Margaret.

They also added $15 to the savings to buy the hot dog cart. Carl and Margaret owned and ran four hot dog stalls in Los Angeles after a couple of years. They moved to Anaheim, California, in 1945, where they opened their first full-service restaurant called Carl’s Drive-In Barbecue.
