History of the Braum’s Brand
Braum’s was founded in 1968 by William Henry “Bill” Braum. He was the son to Henry H. Braum, a man who owned and operated a milk and butter processing plant at Emporia in Kansas.
Braum’s father had started making ice creams under the business name Peter Pan Ice Cream in the early 1950s. He had his own retail chain where Bill Braum worked after graduating from college. Bill would later buy the business from his father in 1957.
He sold the ice cream stores under Peter Pan name in 1967 and remained with the family’s head and processing plant. These assets would later help him to establish 24 stores under the name Braum’s Ice Cream and Dairy Stores in 1968 in Oklahoma.
A processing plant was later built in 1971. In 1975, Braum relocated his herd of dairy cattle to a 4,000-acre farm in Tuttle. He established a bakery in 1978 in Oklahoma City. Later on, the Oklahoma City plant was closed and operations moved to a 260,000-sq.-ft. processing and distribution center in Tuttle.
In 1993, the company added a 35-acre milking center that had 16 free-stall barns and a milking parlor. The milking parlor is currently used to milk thousands of dairy cows in an hour. This is done thrice a day, 7 days a week. The company’s dairy farm is one of the largest in the world.
It’s also the only ice cream company that milks its own cows. There’s enough fresh and raw milk produced every hour the cows are milked to fill up to a million glasses. As of 2002, Braum’s had 7 farms and ranches covering about 40,000 acres. Corn and wheat are grown on these farms to provide feed for the cows.
