History

Bob Evans Restaurants was founded by Bob Evans in 1948. Evans owned a small diner in Gallipolis, Ohio where he processed and packaged sausages. He operated out of his farm which was based in Rio Grande.

Soon enough, his sausage business grew and saw a large number of customers visiting the farm to make bulk purchases. In 1953, his friends and family joined him to form Bob Evans Farms, Inc. His large customer based motivated him to set up the first company restaurant in 1962 at his farm. The company ran a restaurant called “The Sausage Shop”.

Due to multiple orders, Evans soon ran out of capacity to fulfill all of them. He partnered with his cousin Tim Evans who ran the Evans Packing Company to help him package sausage products. He was also joined by Dan Evans, another relative who served as CEO until 2000.

In 1987, Bob Evans purchased the Owens Country Sausage. The Texas-based chain was forced to rebrand due to trademark issues with other identical Owens restaurants. By 2006, all stores under the Owens restaurants name had been closed.

In the mid-1990s, Bob Evans Farms launched a Mexican restaurant known as Cantina del Rio. Unfortunately, it did not perform well. Bob Evans referred to it as a “disaster” in 2003.

The Evans family ran all daily operations until Dan Evans retired in 2000. Stewart K. Owens from the Owens Country Sausage company took over as CEO. He became chairman of the board in 2001. The company did not perform well under his leadership and after 8 of the 9 quarters dropped in profits, he resigned.

The company operated under Larry Corbin who was the interim CEO for a while. Steve Davis, the former president of Long John Silver’s, took over in May 2006. In 2004, Bob Evans Farms acquired Mimi’s Café which had 144 locations. The café was later sold to Groupe Le Duff in 2013.

The company announced the sale of its restaurant business to Golden Gate Capital in January, 2017. An agreement to acquire Pineland Farms was also entered into the same day. In September 2017, Bob Evans Farms acquired Post Holdings.
