The company was founded in 1984 by Zayre store. It is named BJ’S because of the daughter of its first president, Mervyn Weich. Mervyn Weich resigned in 1987 and was immediately succeeded by John Levy. The company was sold to its rival giant discount chain company Ames barely a year later.
