History
It was founded by Bob Fish and Mary Roszel as Beaner coffee in 1995 in East Lansing, Michigan. The company had three locations throughout Lansing in the late 1990s and started expanding with franchising throughout the 21st century. Owing to corporate worries over the importance of the term “beaner” the chain was formally called Biggby Coffee in 2007 and 2008; the Biggby name comes out of the business logo in letter B. The chain grew to more than 230 sites across the USA by 2019.
In hospitality courses at Michigan State University, co-founders Bob Fish and Mary Roszel met and briefly worked together as managers of a Lansing, a Michigan based Flap Jack chain of restaurants. The first location opened in April 1995 in a building previously occupied by Arby’s on Grand River Avenue in East Lansing, Michigan. In 1997 Fish and Roszel opened a second site in central Lansing, Michigan, thanks to an excellent initial venue. A year later, a corporate office was also opened in Lansing that allowed coffee and bulk coffee.
In June 1998, the business was franchised and founded by the Fish, Roszel, and Michael McFall (employed initially by the first barista Roszel). In August 1999, a third-place was located about 2 miles east of the first Grand River Road, in East Lansing. In the next four years, nine more venues were opened in Michigan and Ohio.
Fish has announced in late 2007 that by January 2008, the chain would be officially renamed Biggby Coffee. This decision was taken because of questions over the term beaner as a contradiction for Mexicans. A year before this move, the company’s members conducted brand analysis and picked Biggby Coffee because of the “big B” in the company’s logo.
Roszel withdrew after 17 years in August 2012. Roszel was taken to the School of Hospitality Industry Hall of Fame by her Alma mater for her success with Biggby Coffee, an American coffeehouse chain located in Lansing, Michigan, USA.
