History of the Bealls Brand

Bealls was founded in 1915 by Robert M. Beall Sr. at the age of 22. It started out as a dry goods store based in Bradenton, Florida. Beall used his entire savings to purchase merchandise. He displayed items on empty wooden packing crates.

At the time, all items that Beall sold cost one dollar or less. He, therefore, branded his store “The Dollar Limit”. This later changed after World War I inflation. He changed the name to “The Five Dollar Limit”.

The Florida boom that took place in the 1920s saw business prosper for Beall. He managed to buy a new piece of land facing the courthouse where he erected a department store. The store opened during Christmas of 1924. The boom ended after a few years and was later followed by a crash in the stock market. Robert Beall was unable to pay his debts. This saw him lose his business to the bank. He still worked there as a manager and by 1944, he had put enough money aside to buy his business back.

Florida experienced exponential growth during the 1960s and 1970s. This affected Beall’s business positively. He opened a second store in 1956 in Bradenton’s Westgate Shopping Center. A third one followed in Venice, Florida in 1961. During this time, Robert ran the stores with E.R., his son and junior partner. Robert Beall died in 1979.

E.R. took over as Chairman of the Board. Bealls had grown to 23 stores by 1981. Seven more stores were opened a year later. The growth was fueled by new technologies and the introduction of in-store kiosks. By 1998, the company had a website of its own.

Bealls tries to stay within its financial limit so that it can self-finance. It also owns a design studio that was established in 2004. Its exclusive lines include Coral Bay, Leoma Lovegrove, and Reel Legends.
