History of the brand

Johnny Morris was a founder of Bass Pro Shops in 1972 when he began selling fishing tackle out of his car at a small shop in Springfield, Missouri. Morris opened the first store of Bass Pro Shops on May 17, 1972.

His love of bass fishing and the outdoors led Morris to start selling fishing tackle out of his car at a small shop in Springfield, Missouri. In 1977, Bass Pro opened its second location in Poplar Bluff, Missouri.

Johnny Morris is a fishing revolutionary. He introduced Bass Tracker in 1978, which was the world’s first “fish ready” professionally rigged and nationally marketed boat package that any fisherman can buy – no matter their skill level or where they live in America!

Makes you wonder what other great innovations this man will come up with next…The third store was opened in 1981 and is located in Kansas City.

In 1988, Bass Pro Shop purchased the Great Escape Lodge and Outdoor World.

In 1993, they opened their fourth location in Springfield, Illinois.

On November 17th of 2005, Bass Pro Shops officially became a publicly-traded company. Today, there are more than 170 stores located across North America and Canada under the name “Bass Pro Shops” and “Cabela’s”.

Since then, Bass Pro Shops has expanded to become one of the most popular outdoor retailers in the U.S., with over $3 billion in revenue and more than 182 retail locations across America and Canada.

Bass Pro Shops now has more than 100 stores across North America – many of which are now combined with Cabela’s as part of the Cabela-Bass Pro Group. The company also has 31 boat showrooms and 28 Habitat for Humanity ReStores that sell refurbished building materials and home accessories.

Bass Pro Shops locations

Bass Pro Shops currently has more than 160 retail locations in the U.S. and Canada, including Alabama (4), Arizona (1), Arkansas (3), California (2), Colorado (7), Connecticut (1), Florida (20), Georgia (3)  (1 location is combined with Cabela’s as part of the Cabela-Bass Pro Group), Idaho (4), Illinois (5 – one location is combined with Cabela’s as part of the Cabela-Bass Pro Group)), Indiana (6 – 1 location is combined with Cabela’s as part of the Cabela-Bass Pro Group)), Kansas (6 – 1 location is combined with Cabela’s as part of the Cabela-Bass Pro Group)), Kentucky (3), Louisiana (2), Maryland (1), Michigan (4), Minnesota (5 – 1 location is combined with Cabela’s as part of the Cabela-Bass Pro Group)), Mississippi (3), Missouri (11).

Are Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s the same?

Sort of. They are both big outdoorsy stores that sell camping gear, fishing rods, and hunting rifles. But there are some key differences.

Bass Pro Shop is a little bit smaller than Cabela’s and it has more of a focus on fishing. If you’re looking for waders or tackle boxes, Bass Pro Shop is the place to go.

Cabela’s is bigger and has a stronger emphasis on hunting. They have an entire section of the store devoted to taxidermy, where you can buy mounted deer heads and grizzly bears full of claws.

Bass Pro Shop and Cabela’s are not the same company, but they are owned by the same company.

So, did Bass Pro Shop buy Cabela’s?

The answer to this question is a little murky. Reportedly, the two retailers were in negotiations to merge, but the deal fell through and Bass Pro Shop ended up buying Cabela’s assets instead.

Some people are speculating that this was a hostile takeover on Bass Pro Shop’s part, while others say that Cabela’s was having financial troubles and needed the help of Bass Pro Shop to stay afloat.

At any rate, it looks like things are going to be changing at Cabela’s stores across the country. Some have already been rebranded as Bass Pro Shops, while others will be undergoing renovations in order to reflect the new ownership.

What brands does Bass Pro own?

Bass Pro Shops is the parent company of a number of brands, including:

Havasu 95 – A boat manufacturer that makes fishing boats ranging from 18 to 24 feet in length. Havasu 95 boats are customizable for any fisherman out there who wants their own unique set-up.

Mojo Outdoors – Mojo makes high-performance outerwear designed specifically for hunters and anglers. They’re known for making quality gear that keeps you warm when it’s cold but also cools down if it gets too hot outside!

Canyon Road – Canyon Road specializes in hunting boots and men’s casual footwear with an outdoorsy twist.

Cordova – Cordova makes coolers, backpacks, duffel bags, and non-slip footwear for fishing.

Fishing Rod Rocket Launcher – Launches rods up to 20 feet so you can cast your bait or lure further down the waterway. Just attach it to your boat’s railing, pull the trigger, and voila! Rods are launched in seconds.

Benelli – A hunting shotgun company founded by motorcycle designer Giuseppe Benelli in 1911.

Trulock Choke Tubes – Trulock makes precision screw-in chokes for 12 gauge shotguns that adjust constriction levels from 0 to 100 percent depending on what kind of game you’re trying to bag.

Cabela’s – A key player in the outdoor retail industry and one of Bass Pro Shops’ main competitors. It’s safe to say that Bass Pro Shops probably turned at least a few Cabela’s stores into Bass Pro Shops as part of this deal… but we can’t know for sure without verification from an official source.

Ogio – Ogio is a hunting backpack company founded by David Mikos, who also helped create Titleist golf bags and Van Staal fishing gear. The first Ogio store opened in 1988 and has gone on to become one of the biggest names in outdoor bags today.

Bass Pro store types

There are special names for each shop depending on its location and theme.

The flagship store is known as Outdoor World. Outdoor World features a large aquarium, sky-bridge observatory, shooting arcade, mountain replica with waterfall, and wildlife dioramas.

This location offers lessons in taxidermy, archery, fly-fishing, clay shooting, and more. There is also an interactive treehouse fort that is used for children’s events throughout the year.

A Great Escape Lodge is just like Outdoor World except it has a hotel inside of it themed similarly to the store itself and offering overnight stays for customers who want to stay there while visiting the area or just experiencing Bass Pro Shops first hand.

Outpost locations are smaller stores that are usually built on a budget and generally not as large as others. They generally do not feature a full aquarium or a mountain replica with a waterfall but still have a good variety of outdoor furnishings for sale, as well as fishing gear and hunting gear.

In Cabela’s terms, they are the equivalent of “log cabins” or “mountain lodges.” These locations feature some wildlife dioramas and taxidermy displays, as well as an indoor archery range where customers can try before they buy (most locations offer arrows to use instead of buying your own).

Stick Marsh Outpost locations are just like Woodland Outposts except that these locations are under the same ownership as Cabela’s. The main difference between this store and others is that it focuses more on training rather than hunting, with an area for pheasant rearing, upland game bird hunting instruction, along geese decoy carving classes.

Sportsman`s center locations are specialty stores that only sell firearms, ammunition, hunting licenses, and fishing supplies. Sportsman`s Warehouse Outlet locations are smaller versions of Sportsman`s Centers. They have much less inventory but much more to offer than a subsidiary- they have all the same merchandise as other stores except for guns, ammo, and licenses.

Bass Pro Shops: fishing and boating

Fishing lessons are available throughout the U.S., especially in Florida and Texas, where Bass Pro Shops have stores located directly on waterfronts so that customers can conveniently pick up new fishing equipment and get lessons without having to travel far.

Bass Pro Shops: hunting and shooting sports

The company`s retail outlets carry a wide selection of firearms, ammunition, and gun safes, selling everything from handguns and rifles to shotguns through its subsidiary- Cabela’s. The company also has Firearm Academy locations throughout the United States where you can enroll in courses and learn about different types of weapons or take practice shots.

Hunting licenses are available at Bass Pro Shops for prices that vary depending on the location- the best way to find out is to contact your local store or check online. You can also try taking part in events like Predator Calling Seminars, Turkey Calling Competitions, etc., which are held at some locations.

Cabela’s has its own range of products that are supported by educational resources, helping beginners learn to use hunting equipment properly. They have their own set of weapons and license packages, where the prices are generally lower than those sold at other stores.

Bass Pro Shops: camping gear

Bass Pro Shops has a huge collection of camping gear including tents, sleeping bags, air mattresses, lighting equipment, etc. A number of these items are available at discounted rates or with special discounts for college students. Camping stoves help heat up food quickly so that you don`t need to wait for a long time before you can eat, while electric coolers keep food and drink cold for a few days.

Clothing and footwear at Bass Pro Shops

Bass Pro Shops has an entire section devoted to clothing and footwear, so you can purchase everything you need before embarking on your next outdoor adventure.

Purchase clothing that is suitable for the type of conditions you are likely to encounter- dress in layers if it is cold but make sure that your outermost layer is waterproof. Carry a packable down jacket inside your backpack because they are lightweight and take up very little space when compressed.

Choose footwear carefully- shoes should be comfortable, durable, well ventilated yet insulate against cold temperatures. You should also invest in high-quality socks made from moisture-wicking materials which keep your feet dry by drawing sweat away from your skin surface.
