The history behind Banfield animal hospital

Banfield Pet Hospital is a veterinary practice that primarily operates as a franchise of veterinary medicine. Veterinary medicine can be defined as “the branch of health science concerned with preventing, alleviating, and curing diseases and injuries in non-human animals.”

The history behind Banfield animal hospital originates from the Pacific Northwest. In 1955 Warren Wegert and Roger Faulkner opened the first veterinary practice in Hillsboro, Oregon. At that time they named their company “Veterinary Clinic.”

A year later, Wegert and Faulkner decided to expand their business by adding more hospitals. In order to do so, they sold a percentage of their business to a California-based company, called Thamar Inc. Thamar was a privately-owned corporation that served mainly as a real estate firm at the time. For this reason, Faulkner and Wegert still maintained full control over Veterinary Clinic’s operations.

In 1963, the duo experienced another expansion with the purchase of large animal clinics from Roseburg Animal Hospital Ltd., located in Eugene and Springfield. The next year saw yet another expansion for Veterinary Clinic. This time it took place in Portland, Oregon, and was known as “Portland Veterinary Clinic.”

As Veterinary Clinic’s business grew, the need to establish a larger organization became clear to its directors. In order to accomplish this goal, Thamar Inc . went public and offered 1 million dollars worth of shares at $10 each.

The company did so in 1967 and was renamed “Banfield Pet Hospital Inc.” After the name change, Faulkner and Wegert still managed the day-to-day operations of Banfield until 1973 when they hired Marsha Enright as executive vice president for Banfield Pet Hospitals.

Banfield grew up to 250 clinics by 2001 and made it into the top 100 American Best Small Companies. Ever since then the Banfield brand has expanded into an international corporation that provides veterinary services, pet health insurance, and information technologies.

In October 2004, Marsha Enright retired as President and CEO of the company. In her place, Banfield appointed Dr . Allen S. Berry as president and CEO who would serve as such until 2007 when he was succeeded by Mark Kroll.

How do these plans work?

The first thing to know is that there are two main wellness plans available through Banfield: Wellness Complete (sold at retail)and Wellness Plans are sold through your Banfield hospital or clinic.

What is the difference between the two types of plans? The most notable difference is that Wellness Complete covers up to 3 office visits per year, while the Wellness Plan only offers one. Depending on your pet’s needs, this can be a big deal.

If they have never seen a vet before then it might be smart to opt for the more expensive option so you know that all of their medical records will be available.  Banfield also provides an Annual Wellness Plan which would cover multiple wellness visits with no maximum limit.

Now let’s take a look at some important facts to keep in mind when it comes to Banfield Pet Hospital Wellness plans.

How much does Banfield cost monthly?

These plans start as low as $37.95 for dogs and $26.95 for cats a month /per pet and go up depending on how many animals you have.

If your pets are all over the age of 7 then there is no maximum limit which means that if your elder pup or kitty needs to come in for a few checkups, vaccines, or even surgeries it will not affect their monthly cost.

How much does Banfield insurance cost?

If you are looking for an alternative to these wellness plans, Banfield also offers insurance packages. Keep in mind that most of the cost is usually upfront and there will be a number of restrictions so it is important to understand exactly what you are getting.

For cats, they offer 3 different types: Comprehensive Coverage including spay/neuter, exam visits, diagnostics, and surgery costs, Accident Only which covers exams, surgery, and diagnostics expenses after an injury occurs, and finally Wellness Coverage which includes annual vaccinations as well as a free office visit once a year.

All of the Insurance options include a 24-hour emergency hotline that could help save your pet’s life if an accident or illness happened at night or on the weekend.  They also offer unlimited office visits per year which can be very helpful if your pet is younger and has never seen a vet before.

For dogs there are 4 options: Comprehensive Coverage includes diagnosis, surgery, x-rays, and medical costs.  Accident Only which offers accident coverage up to $1,000, Wellness Coverage includes free yearly exam visits, Heartworm Prevention which covers the cost of monthly protection from heartworms depending on your state requirements, and Kennel Coverage for when traveling or kenneling your pet.
