History
Anna’s Linens was founded in July 1987 by its current Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Alan Gladstone. He named the store after Anna Gladstone, his mother.
The first store was located in Los Angeles, California. Due to the poor economic performance of southern California, the chain was forced to file for bankruptcy in 1993. Fortunately, it got back into business in December 1994.
It was a large store that was normally stocked with household merchandise and items sold at discounts. Each building was about 10,000 square feet in size. At one point, Anna’s Linens had more than 250 stores across 19 states.
In 2005, it was reincorporated under Anna’s Linens, Inc. in Delaware. It had a growth strategy of increasing its footprint by 50 stores as of 2005 and 60 stores by 2006. By June 2005, it had opened 18 new stores.
The chain would then expand to Puerto Rico in 2012 thanks to a partnership with DDR Corp. Things took a turn for the worse and in 2015, the company had to file for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. It owed creditors more than $100 million.
Most locations were shut down. In 2015, a debtor’s sale saw 41 store leases being taken over in an auction. National Stores Inc. acquired the intellectual property rights. The stores still offer the basic products that Anna’s Linens had and operate under the new name Anna’s Linens by Fallas.
