The history of Adorama store
In 1974 on 34th Street in New York City the first Adorama store opened. The founders believed that people should have equal access to photography equipment. The store started as a simple camera store, but soon it became one of the first outlets to sell photographic equipment through mail-order catalogs.
In 1983 Adorama Learning Center and Adorama-RadioShack were created. They introduced evening classes in photography and started a weekly radio show about photo equipment.
In 1994 the company decided to expand again and opened their first store outside of New York City, in Albany. After that Adorama moved to Rochester and Bridgeport.
In 1997 AdoramaPix was launched. This was a photo finishing website with digital printing. It was the first of its kind.
Also, the company launches Adorama.com in 1998 to take online orders. It’s unbelievable, but Adorama.com is still working to this very day.
Adorama TV and Adorama-RadioShack were launched in 1999 and 2002 respectively. They’re both dedicated to photography.
In 2001 Adorama acquired D&H Photo Video, which is known for selling photo equipment at discount prices under various brands like Ritz Camera and Wolf Camera.
In 2005 and 2006 more stores opened, located in New Jersey and Westchester County, all under the name of Adorama Camera & Video Incorporated. The company was then selling hobbyist equipment and serious photo gear at affordable prices.
In 2008 there was a significant increase in sales (50%) almost immediately after the opening of an additional store in Manhattan’s World Trade Center shopping mall. Today Adorama has locations throughout the US: on Fashion Avenue, Brooklyn, Rochester, etc.
Adorama can be proud of having three Hall Of Fame photographers on their team: Jay Maisel (photographer), Tony Corbell (photographer), and David de Rothchild (CNBC host).
Adorama employees are all passionate about photography so they will gladly take the time to answer your questions and show you around our wide selection of products. They can even give you advice on which camera or lens is best suited to your needs.
At present Adorama is one of the biggest multichannel retailers operating under several brands: Adorama, B&H Photo Video Pro Audio, Park Camera (Europe), PriceSCANNER (Australia), and TheCameraMall (Japan).
