History of Acme

Acme was founded by two Irish immigrants, Robert Crawford and Samuel Robinson. They established the first store in South Philadelphia in 1891. Some sources claim that the store was first opened in 1887 or 1872.

In 1917, Crawford and Robinson decided to merge Acme Markets with four other grocery stores in Philadelphia. The new large store was called American Stores. Banners under the new store quickly started to sprout throughout Philadelphia. They rivaled smaller chains such as A&P and Penn Fruit.

In the 1950s, American Stores introduced self-service outlets. The company then changed its logo to a “fish-eye” or “teardrop” image. This was meant to eliminate the inconsistency that came with using Acme Markets and Acme Super Markets scripts from the 1950s. However, this was not done across all chains. The store that was located in West Philadelphia retained its signage.

The new logo was followed by a new building style called “A-Frame.” The building design was meant to compete with Food Fair, Penn Fruit, and A&P which had their own trademarked architecture. Most of the stores put up in the 1960s incorporate this design.

In 1961, the company acquired Alpha Beta, a chain of supermarkets located in southern California. Many of the stores that led up to the 1970s had a regional drugstore, liquor store, Wolcoo, Sears, JCPenney, or Kmart paired with them.

American Stores bought franchise rights to Pizza Hut in 1968. The company also acquired several Kmart Foods stores. Between 1978 and 1982, the company also bought many Food Fair stores during the latter’s bankruptcy and Penn Fruit stores. Most of these were rebranded and became Acme stores.

American Stores was bought by Skaggs Companies in 1979. It was later acquired by Albertsons in late 1999. Albertsons was later bought by SuperValu and Cerberus Capital Management in 2006. Acme became fully owned by Cerberus in 2013. Cerberus runs Albertsons stores under Albertsons LLC.
